AI search optimisation

Getting cited by AI, not just ranked by Google.

A growing share of searches never reach a results page. Someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI overview a question, gets a paragraph back, and acts on the two or three businesses named inside it. AI search optimisation is the work of being one of those names.

What changed

Why AI search optimisation is now its own job

Traditional SEO competes for a position on a list. AI search competes to be quoted inside an answer. The signals overlap but they are not the same, and a site that ranks well can still be invisible to an assistant.

The work

What AI search optimisation actually involves

Six things, and none of them are tricks. Assistants quote sources that are easy to parse, internally consistent and unambiguous about who is being described.

Structure

A complete schema graph

Organisation, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup from the schema.org vocabulary, connected rather than scattered. Machines read structured data first, and a page without it has to be inferred from prose.

Format

Content written as answers

Real questions as headings with a direct answer in the first two sentences. Assistants lift passages, so a page that buries the answer in paragraph six rarely gets quoted.

Facts

Citable, specific claims

Prices, timeframes, coverage areas and processes stated plainly. Vague marketing language cannot be quoted because there is nothing in it to quote.

Consistency

The same facts everywhere

Your name, address, services and prices identical across the site, your Google Business Profile and every directory. Contradictions make a model distrust all versions of you.

Presence

Mentions on sources models read

Directories, industry sites, and anywhere your business is described by somebody else. Models weight corroboration, so being described consistently in several places matters.

Access

Crawlable by AI systems

Many sites unintentionally block AI crawlers in robots.txt or behind aggressive firewall rules. We check what each assistant can actually reach, because invisible cannot be cited.

Proof

How AI search optimisation gets measured

This is where most agencies go quiet, because there is no equivalent of a rank tracker yet. What can be measured, and what we report on monthly, is this.

Measure 01

Citation checks

We ask each assistant the questions your buyers ask, on a fixed monthly schedule, and record whether you are named and in what position within the answer.

Measure 02

Referral traffic by source

Analytics now shows traffic arriving from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini as identifiable referrers. Small numbers today, growing quickly, and highly qualified when it lands.

Measure 03

Crawler access logs

Server logs show which AI crawlers reached your site and what they read. If a crawler never arrives, no amount of content work will get you quoted.

Google documents how its own AI features select and link sources in its AI features guidance, and the practical answer is the same as the honest answer for normal search: publish clear, accurate, well structured content and make it easy to read.

Cost

AI search optimisation pricing

This is not sold separately as a gimmick. It sits inside a campaign, because the same work that gets you cited also improves normal rankings.

AI visibility audit

R4,500 once-off

We ask the assistants your buyers' questions, record where you appear and where competitors do, and hand you the gap analysis with the technical fixes listed.

Performance campaign

R6,500 per month

AI search optimisation as part of a full campaign: schema, answer-led content, entity consistency, crawler access and monthly citation reporting.

Schema implementation

from R4,500

A complete structured data graph built and deployed across an existing site, without the ongoing campaign. One-off technical work.

Full pricing on SEO cost. If your site cannot be crawled properly at all, that is a build problem first, covered under WordPress development.

AI search optimisation questions

What is AI search optimisation?

It is the work of getting your business named and linked inside the answers AI assistants give, rather than only ranking on a traditional results page. It is also called answer engine optimisation or generative engine optimisation. The underlying work is structured data, clearly answered questions and consistent facts about your business.

How do I get my business to appear in ChatGPT answers?

By being the clearest available source on the question. That means schema markup so machines can parse you, content that answers real questions directly rather than burying the answer, specific facts like prices and coverage areas, and the same information repeated consistently wherever your business appears online.

Is this different from normal SEO?

It overlaps but it is not identical. Normal SEO competes for a position; AI search competes to be quoted. A page can rank fourth and still be the source an assistant cites, and a page can rank first and never be quoted because the answer is buried in prose.

Can you guarantee I will be cited by AI?

No. Nobody can, and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing. What we can do is make you the easiest source to quote, track whether it is happening, and report honestly when it is not.

Is it worth doing yet, or is it too early?

The honest answer is that volumes are still small compared with Google search, but the traffic is unusually qualified because the assistant has already recommended you. Since the work also improves normal rankings, you are not choosing between them.

How would I know if it is working?

Three ways: we ask the assistants your buyers' questions monthly and record whether you are named, analytics shows referrals arriving from AI platforms as their own source, and server logs show which AI crawlers reached your site.

What is answer engine optimisation?

Another name for the same discipline: optimising to be quoted inside AI-generated answers rather than only ranked in a list. You will also see it called generative engine optimisation or GEO. The label matters less than the work, which is structure, clarity and consistency.

Does AI search optimisation replace normal SEO?

No, it sits on top of it. The assistants lean heavily on the same signals of quality and authority that Google uses, so a site that is invisible to normal search rarely gets cited by AI. Doing both together is why it lives inside our performance campaign.

Which AI platforms matter most in South Africa?

Google’s AI overviews reach the most people because they sit inside ordinary Google searches. ChatGPT and Gemini follow, with Perplexity smaller but growing among researchers. We track all four monthly, because the mix shifts.

Do AI assistants use my Google Business Profile?

Yes, heavily, for local questions. When someone asks an assistant for a recommendation in a town, the underlying data often comes from business profiles, reviews and maps. A complete, active profile feeds both the map pack and the AI answer.

Can schema markup really change AI visibility?

It is one of the few technical levers that clearly helps. Structured data removes ambiguity about who you are, what you sell, where you operate and what things cost, which is exactly what a model needs before it will state facts about you with confidence.

How long does AI search optimisation take to show results?

Technical foundations land within weeks. Citations follow content and consistency, typically over two to four months, and we show the monthly citation checks from the start so you can watch mentions appear question by question.

Next step, no cost

Find out whether AI already mentions you.

Send us three questions your buyers ask. We will put them to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI overview and send you back exactly what they said, including who they named instead of you.
