Your Google Business Profile is doing more selling than your website.
For most local businesses in South Africa, more people see the Google Business Profile than ever reach the site. They read the reviews, look at the photos, check the hours and call, all without clicking through. A neglected profile loses those calls silently.

What a Google Business Profile decides
Four things happen on that panel before anyone visits your website, and each of them can end the enquiry.
Whether you appear at all
The map pack shows three businesses. Category accuracy, service areas and proximity decide whether you are one of them, and no amount of website work substitutes for getting this right.
Whether they trust you
Star rating, review count and how recently people reviewed. A 4.9 with 120 reviews beats a 5.0 with three, every time, and an unanswered one-star sits there permanently.
Whether you look open
Wrong hours, no recent photos and no posts read as a business that may have closed. Buyers move on rather than risk a wasted call, and Google demotes dormant profiles.
Whether they call or click
Services listed with prices, questions answered, a booking link. Every question the panel answers is one less reason to keep shopping around.
A complete profile outranks a clever one.
Google Business Profile setup and optimisation
Setup is a day. Optimisation is ongoing, because the profile is a living listing that Google keeps scoring.
Claim and verify
Create or take ownership of the listing and get through Google's verification, including the postcard and video steps when they are required.
Build it out
Categories, description, services with prices, service areas, hours, attributes and the booking or enquiry link. Every field Google offers gets used.
Photos and proof
Uploading real photos of the team, the work and the premises, named and geo tagged properly rather than dumped in as stock images.
Keep it alive
Weekly posts, questions seeded and answered, new photos monthly and every review replied to within a day.
Things that quietly suppress a profile
- A wrong primary category. The single most common error. Being listed as a general contractor when people search for a plumber costs you every one of those searches.
- Address inconsistency. If your address is written three different ways across the web, Google trusts none of them. Consistency is unglamorous and it moves rankings.
- Duplicate listings. Old profiles from a previous owner or a moved address split your reviews and confuse the index. They need finding and merging.
- Keyword stuffing the business name. Adding "Best Security Midrand" to your name breaches Google's business name guidelines and gets listings suspended. It works until it does not.
- Silence. No posts, no new photos, no review replies for six months. Google reads dormancy as a business that may not be operating.
Reviews are the part you can actually move
You cannot change how far you are from a searcher and you cannot change your competitors' head start. You can change how many people review you, how recently, and how you answer. Google's own review guidelines are clear that soliciting fake reviews or offering incentives is a violation, so the only durable approach is asking real customers well.
At the right moment
Immediately after the job is finished and the customer is happy, not weeks later in a newsletter. A direct review link by WhatsApp converts far better than a request buried in an email.
To every single one
Including the bad ones, especially the bad ones. A calm reply to a one-star review persuades more buyers than the five-star ones above it, because it shows what happens when something goes wrong.
A steady trickle
Twenty reviews in one week looks manufactured and can trigger a filter. Two or three a week, consistently, builds a profile that keeps climbing.

Google Business Profile questions
What does Google Business Profile optimisation cost?
R2,500 once-off for setup and full optimisation, or R3,450 a month if you want it managed with posts, photos, review replies and tracking. Recovery of a suspended or duplicated listing starts at R3,500 because the work varies.
Is Google Business Profile the same as Google My Business?
Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile, and the standalone app was retired, so it is now managed directly through Google Search and Maps. Plenty of South African businesses still search for the old name.
Can I rank without a physical address?
Yes. Service area businesses can hide the address and list the suburbs they cover instead. You still need a verifiable address for Google's records, but it does not have to be shown publicly.
How do I get more Google reviews?
Ask immediately after the work is done, using a direct review link sent by WhatsApp. Do not offer discounts or incentives, which breaches Google's guidelines and risks the reviews being removed along with your standing.
My listing was suspended. Can it be recovered?
Usually. Suspensions typically follow a guideline breach such as a keyword stuffed business name, a virtual office address or a category mismatch. We identify the cause, correct it and file the reinstatement, which takes anywhere from days to a few weeks.
Someone else controls my profile. What now?
You can request ownership through Google, and if the current owner does not respond within a set period the claim transfers. It is a common situation when a previous agency set the listing up in their own account.
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes, the profile itself is free from Google, and nobody should charge you a licence fee for it. What you pay for is the work: setup done properly, categories chosen correctly, and the ongoing posting, photos and review management that keep it ranking.
Do I need a website to have a Google Business Profile?
No. The profile stands on its own and can take calls, messages and direction requests without a site. A website strengthens it and catches the searches the map does not, but you can start with the profile alone.
How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?
Weekly is the sweet spot for most businesses. Posts expire from prominence quickly, so a steady weekly rhythm keeps the profile looking active to both Google and buyers, without becoming a content burden.
Can you remove a fake Google review?
Sometimes. Reviews that breach Google policy, spam, conflicts of interest, off-topic rants about a different business, can be reported and are often removed. Genuine negative reviews cannot be removed, and the right response is a calm public reply, which persuades more readers than the review dissuades.
What photos should I upload to my profile?
Real ones: the team, the premises, the vehicles, work being done, before and after shots. Profiles with recent genuine photos get measurably more calls and direction requests than ones with stock images or an empty gallery.
My profile used to get calls and now it does not. Why?
Usually one of three things: a competitor has overtaken you on reviews and activity, a category or suspension issue has quietly reduced your visibility, or your prominence has decayed through dormancy. An audit identifies which within a day.
