Why quotes differ so much

Six things that move your SEO cost

Two agencies can quote an SEO cost of R4,000 and R25,000 for what sounds like the same job. Usually one of these explains the gap.

Driver 01

How competitive your terms are

Ranking for "plumber Brits" and "insurance South Africa" are different sports, and Google's SEO starter guide is clear that competition drives effort. Competition sets how much content and authority work is needed, and that is most of the cost.

Driver 02

The state of your site

A fast, well structured site needs less remedial work. A slow site on an old build can absorb the first two months before any campaign work starts.

Driver 03

How many areas you serve

One suburb is one page and one profile. Twelve towns is twelve pages, twelve sets of tracking and a lot more citation work.

Driver 04

Whether content is included

The single biggest hidden variable. Some retainers include four pages a month, some include none and bill separately. Always ask how many pages, not whether content is covered.

Driver 05

Who actually does the work

A R25,000 retainer with three specialists on it can be better value than a R6,000 one where a junior spends two hours. Ask who touches the account and for how long.

Driver 06

Reporting and account time

Large agencies build account management into the fee. That has real value if you need it, and is pure overhead if you would rather have the hours spent on the work.

How to judge whether an SEO cost is worth paying

Six questions. Ask them of us and of everyone else you are considering, and compare the answers rather than the numbers. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO makes much the same point.

The six questions

  • How many hours a month, and who does them? A price without hours attached is not a quote, it is a subscription. Seniority matters more than headcount.
  • How much content is included? Get a number of pages or posts in writing. This is where most retainers quietly under-deliver.
  • What happens in month one? If the answer is vague, they have not looked at your site yet. A real answer names specific technical fixes.
  • What does the report contain? Traffic graphs are easy. Ask whether it shows individual keyword movement, work done with hours, and enquiries attributed to source.
  • What is the notice period? Twelve month lock-ins mostly protect agencies that are not delivering. Thirty days keeps everyone honest.
  • What are you not doing? An honest agency will name the things outside scope. One that says it does everything is describing a brochure, not a plan.

SEO cost questions we get asked

How much does SEO cost in South Africa?

Between roughly R1,500 and R35,000 a month depending on who you hire and how competitive your market is. Freelancers sit at R1,500 to R4,000, small agencies at R4,000 to R12,000, established agencies at R12,000 to R35,000, and enterprise work above that. Ours is R3,450 or R6,500 a month, or R4,500 for a once-off audit.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Sometimes, for a very small business in a low competition market where a few hours a month is genuinely enough. The risk is that below about R3,000 a month there is rarely time for both technical work and content, so you get one or the other and wonder why nothing moves.

Should I pay monthly or once-off for SEO?

Once-off buys you a diagnosis and a plan. Monthly buys you execution. If you have staff who can act on a plan, start with an audit at R4,500 and save the retainer. If you do not, an audit alone will sit in a folder.

How long until SEO pays for itself?

For most local businesses, six to twelve months. Work out what one new customer is worth to you and how many the retainer needs to produce to break even. If a customer is worth R15,000, a R3,450 monthly campaign needs roughly three a year to justify itself, which is a low bar.

Do you charge a setup fee?

No. There is no setup fee, no onboarding charge and no minimum term. The audit is optional and separately priced so you can buy the diagnosis without committing to the campaign.

Why do you publish prices when most agencies do not?

Because the price question is the first one everybody has, and making people book a call to hear it wastes their time and ours. If our numbers do not suit you, you have found that out in thirty seconds instead of after a meeting.

What does R3,450 a month actually buy?

Roughly, the technical maintenance of your site, one new content page written and published, your Google Business Profile managed, rank tracking across your terms, and the monthly report. The invoice itemises the hours so you can see it rather than take it on faith.

Are there hidden costs in SEO?

There should not be, but the common ones to ask about are content billed separately, "setup" or onboarding fees, tool costs passed through, and link placements charged per link. Our pricing includes content and has none of the others.

Does SEO cost more for e-commerce?

Usually, because stores have more pages, more technical surface and more competitive terms. Product and category work pushes most stores into the performance tier at R6,500 a month, and enterprise catalogues beyond that.

Why is SEO a monthly cost rather than once-off?

Because rankings are contested. A once-off fix improves your position and then competitors keep publishing while your site stands still. The monthly work is what compounds: content accumulating, authority building and problems fixed as they appear.

Can I pause my SEO campaign?

Yes, with thirty days notice like cancellation, and restart when you like. Expect some decay during a long pause, since competitors do not stop, but everything built, the content, the structure, the profile, remains yours and keeps working at a slower burn.

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads in the long run?

For most established terms, substantially. Ads buy each click forever at auction prices, while SEO builds an asset whose cost per enquiry falls as rankings mature. The catch is patience: ads pay this week, SEO pays from around month four onwards and compounds after that.
